Bio-Medical Waste during covi-19 was the main topic in UN environment program
Ludhiana (Rajkumar Sathi). World Environment day event on “managing biomedical waste in covid19 times organized by United Nations environment program (UNEP) and UNIDO (United nations industrial development organization).
Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina (State Technical Advisor, UNIDO) was invited as panelist in this event. He discussed about the medical waste management during covid19 and current situation in Punjab. He further said that pandemic outbreak loads extra burden on medical waste management system as Punjab is generating extra 4-5 tone of covid 19 wastes in a day, so effective medical waste management is very crucial. He added that GEF-MOEFCC-UNIDO project “Environmentally sound management of medical waste in India” has made considerable efforts towards safe and environmentally sound medical waste disposal even in covid19 situation in India. It has filled the gaps; hospitals were facing in medical waste management. In this event e -learning portal for medical waste management was launched. Dr Chhina said it will encourage and inspire health sector to create and adopt the pathways that lead to sound medical waste management. He also discussed about the disposal of mask/gloves during pandemic and shared work on community survey done by Mr. Arjun Sareen (Project officer, UNIDO) and Mr. Chaitanya Sharma (Surveyor). In the event, World Health Organization (WHO) representative Dr Roderico H Ofrin, Mr. Atul Bagai (Head UNEP), Dr Rene (Regional Head UNIDO), Jt. Secretary, MoEFCC Mr. Naresh pal Gangwar, Dr. Prashant Gargava (Member Secretary, CPCB) and technical advisors from other Pollution Control Boards were present as panelist. Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) Member Secretary Dr. Prashant Gargava applauded the work of UNIDO project “Environmentally sound management of medical waste in India”. Based on the recommendations of the project and the technical training of HCF staff across the five project states (Punjab, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Orissa and Karnataka) were protected from covid infection said Dr. Rene. The event was successful as the entire panel gave fruitful recommendations towards environmentally sound management of medical waste and launched the E-portal for BMWM learning. Facility Director Dr. Vishwadeep Goyal congratulate Dr. RS Chhina and applauded his work in the environment field.
