Alumni pay tributes to Dr. Manohar Singh Gill on his demise

Ludhiana (Rajkumar Sathi).  Alumni Association of SCD Govt. College, Ludhiana has deeply mourned the sad demise of their illustrious alumnus Dr. Manohar Singh Gill, IAS, a Former Chief Election Commissioner and a central minister who studied here from 1953 t0 1957. Alumni Association spokesperson Brij Bhushan Goyal was joined by the current Principal of the college Dr Tanvir Likhari and scores of old students including Principal Ashok Kapoor, Prof I P Setia, K B Singh, Shivdular S.Dhillon ,Dr Tara Singh Kamal, I P Sethi, Amarjit Singh Tikka and Amarjit S Sandhu besides many others Allumi said, “DR M S Gill made their Alma Mater proud as he became torch bearer and his life will always be a lighthouse for new generation students.

M S Gill a, Padma Vibhushan (2000) awardee always yearned to come to his Alma Mater and he helped the institution generously with ample funds from his MPLad quota. He made available an amount of rupees 50 lacs for the noble cause of construction of new rooms for the girls’ hostel as women education always remained supreme in his mind to curb the menace of female feticide.” Goyal further added that the last time he came to his college at Ludhiana was on 15th March ,2018 at the time of his Alma Mater’s Prize Distribution Ceremony and for his own book release at the hands of the then principal Dr. Dharam Singh Sandhu. His book ‘”Lahaul Spiti di Kahaniyan” written both in Punjabi & Hindi is about the life and culture of Ladakh and his anecdotes with the people when he was posted there in the year 1961.

The college has conspicuously placed his books in the library. He also visited his Alma Mater in the year 2015 and prior to that in the year 1981 at the time of the Principal Rajinder Verma. He was elated when he was shown his old admission form and his pics on college walls. Gill always said that he owed much to the college teachers and environs which helped him to succeed in life. He always remained emotionally attached to the college.” K B Singh an alumnus and  a former DGM PNB said that the “APNI MANDI” of farmers in PAU near the rose garden in the mid-1980s where only farmers brought their produce on Saturdays weekly market was begun at the behest of M S Gill which was his brain child concept for marketing the vegetables directly by the farmers. He always worked for the success of agriculture and cooperatives in Punjab.” Alumni Association of SCD Govt. College pays humble tributes to this stalwart who made a difference for the better in the lives of people.
